Mac VPN battery drain after the lid has been closed
At 7:10 a.m. the lid has been closed since midnight. The battery is far below where you left it.
Why this happens
A closed lid is not always as asleep as it looks. A tunnel that stays up can still ask the machine to move packets. Those requests are the network wakeups. They are small, and across a night they are the reason a morning battery does not match the evening one. You did not play a video, you did not compile a project, and the charge is still gone.
Locking the screen, by itself, does not mean the tunnel stopped. The menu bar can still be connected while the display is dark. Disconnect when idle is a setting. Until that setting is on, idle does not disconnect you. The default leaves the tunnel up, which is the right default for a person who wants the connection waiting, and the wrong default for a person who wanted the machine to sleep.
The same pattern shows up on a train with the lid cracked, and on a desk where the Mac was only supposed to fetch mail. An idle device that keeps talking to the network spends the battery on that talk. Reducing how often the network is woken, and optionally dropping the tunnel when the display sleeps, are the two levers that match the failure. The morning reconnect is still one tap, or automatic if you chose the switch.
What Kovalink does
- One tap connects Kovalink, and one tap disconnects it.
- Auto selects a server when you connect again, or you pick one from the Nodes list.
- The menu bar shows whether the tunnel is up, including after you unlock.
- The latest version sharply reduces network wakeups while the device is idle, which uses less power.
- On Mac, Disconnect when idle is off by default.
- With that switch on, locking the screen or display sleep disconnects, and unlocking connects again.
- The wakeup change applies to the device, iPhone included. The idle-disconnect switch is the Mac control.
Start in three steps

- Sign in with an email code, Sign in with Apple, Google, or Whop. One email is one account, and access follows that account across devices.
